If you’ve been in the blogging industry any length of time, you’ll know everyone talks about creating a viable product to sell. It’s more than slapping something together but meeting a specific pain point your customer has.

In today’s episode, we’re talking about product creating, why you should have one, and how you can begin today in creating your very own in the next 30 days.
Listen to the audio:
When I started this blog in 2009 I had no idea what I was doing. It’s almost embarrassing to go back and look at some of my earlier posts. Today, I’m very focused. I know what I’m writing, I know my niche, and I have a good idea what my audience is looking for.
My main focus for this blog is helping new and overwhelmed writers wade through the muck, get the tools they need, find their voice, so they can succeed in life. As of today, I only have three products for sale, all of which are books.
It’s time for a change and today I’m telling you what I’m doing and why you should follow suit and create your own.
Why products? Three reasons:
1. Products create passive income. [11:40]
One of the most difficult aspects of having a blog is the constant need to create content for consumption. Imagine if Netflix only gave away their stuff. They wouldn’t be able to put food on the table. Blogging is similar. If you don’t monetize, you’ll never be more than a hobby blogger.
There are two types of income:
- Time for Money. – This is the 9 to 5 job. You get paid for your time. It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting at a desk, flipping hamburgers, or consulting. You’re trading hours for dollars.
-
Passive Income. – This is where you create something that’s either tangible, like a book, or a digital product, like my ebooks or an online learning course. These create residual income as people buy. The more often people buy, the more you’ll make.
2. Products create a stronger community. [18:12]
The problem I’ve had and a lot of bloggers face, we keep creating free content. There’s nothing wrong with free content, but having something that creates authority and something that creates a deeper connection gives you an edge the free bloggers can’t compete with.
The more free content we put in the world, the less interested people become. But, if you have something that shows the world, you mean what you say, they’ll pay you for that knowledge. If they see value in your blog, they’ll see even more value in paying you for your expertise.
3. Products create transformation. [21:44]
We live in a world where everyone is selling something. It’s not the product you’re really selling, it’s the transformation it brings. When we create a viable passive income product, people want to connect with this idea, can it solve my problem?
Creating something is hard work, but I know it pays off. I’ve purchased several products that have changed my life. Today, I’m a better blogger because I was a part of Michael Hyatt’s Platform University. This is what products can do. They take a need, amplify that need, and then create a solution to meet that need.
What’s next?
[27:53] I have begun working on creating two different products that meet two different needs. It’s been a fun journey, but now is the time to crank them out and get them ready for purchase.
To finish these projects and to offer you a solution to creating your own products, I am asking you to join me on a 30-day journey.
I’ve partnered with my friends at ConvertKit. They have developed a free 4-week training program called, Product Creation Masterclass. This course is broken up into four parts:
