When I look through Amazon Kindle’s store, I realize there are a lot of books. The opposite is also true; when I look through a cemetery, I realize there are hundreds of unwritten books. Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone has a message to share.
When I first wrote my book, Divine Providence, I had no idea the blessing it would be. There was one father who emailed me and said, ”Thank you for writing this book. It has helped me be more intentional in my family.”
Because God has given us all a unique voice, we are doing the world a disservice by not sharing that voice. If I had not written my novella, that father never would have made the choice to become more intentional about their family.
Here’s what I learned by writing my first book, and what you can take away in getting your message out of your heart and onto paper.
1. I had to stop procrastinating and write. One of the biggest blunders a leader can make, is by not writing. Great leaders not only read, but they also write. If I don’t take the time to sit down and write, the message I have on my heart will never happen, and no one will be changed. In fact, I procrastinated in writing this post. So what do we do to stop the procrastination?
- Eliminate distractions.
- Go to a quiet area.
- Don’t think, just write.
2. I had to carve out the time to write. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been talking about goal setting. And as we approach 2016, we need to know where we’re going. If you don’t take the time to carve out the time to write, you’ll find other things to fill that time.
Our time is limited. It waits for no one. And the frustrating part, if you don’t take control of your time, you’ll waste it on unimportant stuff. So, take the time this month, make an appointment with yourself and schedule your writing days in 2016. Trust me, you’ll thank me.
3. I made the choice to blog regularly. If you’re a pastor, business leader or just an author, you should consider starting a weekly blog. As a writer, blogging has improved my prose. As a pastor, blogging has helped me connect with my parishioners. As a leader, blogging has helped me clarify my message.
If you have a message to share, and I know you do, start a blog. It’s the best way for you to put words to your voice. Maybe you ask, who would listen to me?
- If you have a message, someone will listen.
- Your message is something you wish people would have told you at this point in life.
- If one person’s life is changed by your message, then you’ve done your job.
This is why in 2015, I made the clear choice to blog regularly. It wasn’t because I needed one more thing to do, it was because I knew I had a message to share, and I knew people needed to hear it.
4. Today is the best time to blog! It begins now. If we don’t leverage our time to take our message and voice to the next level we will be lost in the crowd. I’ve found that by taking the time to voice my message, people have listened. In 2015 alone, I’ve had nearly 3,000 unique visitors to my blog. That wouldn’t have happened if I remained silent. Today is the day to choose to be heard. Are you willing to take the chance?
