After publishing my first novel, Divine Providence, I received an email from a reader indicating that my book encouraged him to reflect on his relationship with his children, ultimately helping him become a more attentive father. His words meant the world to this once fledgling writer. My intention was not to provide a guide on fatherhood; rather, I aimed to tell a story about trusting God during challenging times — relying less on personal strength. However, for this dad, my worldview resonated and offered a meaningful lesson about trusting God in relation to his children.

As writers, our mission goes beyond just telling stories to ourselves. We’re here to unleash our unique individuality through our writing and spark real change — intersecting our worldview with the power to challenge someone else’s perspective. Each word has the potential to inspire transformation, encourage reflection, and ignite change in the lives of our audience.

Writing is a craft that must be developed.

It’s important to recognize that there is no correct way to approach writing. Each writer’s journey is unique, and the methods each employ will vary. Writing takes years of practice, perseverance, and patience to master — however, developing a daily discipline will set you on a journey of discovery that will shape your life one story at a time.

Writing prompts are your daily training.

Remember Tiger Woods? Every morning, without fail, he would wake up early to run four miles before even thinking about breakfast. After that, he dedicated two to three hours each day to hitting golf balls at the driving range, perfecting his swing and honing his skills. He never gave up. He kept at it and worked on his skills. That’s what made him the best to ever play the game of golf.
Your writing is the same. Writing prompts offer a structured way to explore ideas, characters, and settings, allowing you to think outside the box, work on your craft, and become a better writer. By engaging with a daily exercise, you can break through mental barriers and generate fresh concepts that may lead to unique storylines.

Your voice is your greatest asset.

Whether you’re crafting an exciting fantasy novel, a gripping mystery, or a thought-provoking non-fiction article or book, the value you contribute lies in the depth of the messages you weave through your work. By utilizing our unique life experiences, we can show readers how their lives can be enriched through the worlds we create.
If you want to develop your unique voice and style — learning to articulate thoughts more clearly — writing exercises will help reveal your strengths and weaknesses. It’s not about just writing for the sake of writing; it’s about being the very best at your craft.

Start writing today.

The best writers write daily. Even if you’ve never written a book, take time to perfect your craft and write your story down. The more we write, the better we become.

To get you started, here are three prompts to spur your mind into action:

  • Music is good for the soul. Write about a time when a song on the radio changed the outlook of your day.
  • A lighthouse in the current year receives a distress signal from a WWII ship that sank in 1945 off the coast of Hawaii, detailing your family’s hidden secrets.
  • Genesis 1:1 tells us that God created everything in the beginning. Why is this important and how does it connect to the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
