Psalm 1[18:19]-22
“Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, and I will praise the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord, through which the righteous shall enter. I will praise You, for You have answered me, and have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected has become the Chief Cornerstone…”
If we want our lives to be successful we need to understand that our lives are not our own, our lives belong to the Lord. However, we need to live our life for righteousness sake. The Psalmist is saying that the Lord is going to open the door of righteousness for us to go through. We now have a choice to make. We can either try and do things our way, or we can align ourselves with the Lord, live like we’re already dead.
I told a story the other Wednesday night at Ignite from the mini-series “Band of Brothers.” Captain Speirs found PFC Albert Blithe cowering in a foxhole he’d dug that night. He sat there clutching his gun, not wanting to move. Captain Speirs asked Blithe why he was hiding in the foxhole. The response was in mention to when he landed in Normandy on D-Day during WWII. He was alone and scared – so he slept hoping the enemy would think he was dead. Captain Peirce said something very powerful… “If you want to function as a leader and as a soldier you need to believe and act as though you are already dead…”
Our Christian lives are not much different when it comes to living for the Kingdom of God here on the earth. We have this idea that we can, go to church on Sunday’s, work Monday through Friday, come home spend time with our family, and start all over again the next week. Life is so much more important that coasting through life. We have a choice on how we live our lives. We can either do things ourselves, or we can live with a mission. Our mission is to be about God’s mission. That mission is to bring the lost into the Kingdom.
Since we have answered the call of salvation, we have to live our lives with Christ as its center. If He is not the center of our lives, we will fail. If we are to be successful in the Kingdom of God, we need to understand that there is so much more to life than coasting – it is about having Christ be the foundation of our lives. When people see that we are not playing games with church, and see that we are serious about our relationship with the Lord, they will sit up and pay attention.
Paul said in Philippians that, “To live is Christ and to die is gain…” This needs to be our mandate. If Christ is our cornerstone, the foundation of our lives – it will be so much easier to live as though we are dead. Our lives count for nothing here, but everything in eternity.
