One of my favorite Childhood shows was Reading Rainbow with LaVar Burton “Take a look, it’s in a book, it’s reading rainbow…” Successful writers and leaders are readers. REading is the one thing that will catapult you to success. He even has a new podcast called, LaVar Burton Reads.
The world’s most successful entrepreneurs and writers are avid readers. Statistics show the more you read, the more money you’ll earn. But, the more we read in our areas of influence and those self-help books, the better chance we have of being successful.
I’m an avid reader. I typically will read 6-7 books a year. This year, I’m on par with that–though my goal is closer to 10 books in 2017.
Just ask my wife, I read all the time. I always have a book by my bedside, in the bathroom, and with the Kindle, I can read anywhere. The more I learn, the more I’ll know. The more I know, the more I can pour into my readers.
I want to walk you through 5 ways you can become a lifelong reader and why it will bring you success as a leader. And did you know you should be reading the Bible daily? You should and I’ll tell you why.
1. Reading needs to be a daily habit. Only the most successful people read, and they read daily. It doesn’t have to be a book, though books are best, however reading something daily increases your mental capability. It will broaden your horizon and give you the power to accomplish your dreams.
2. Reading allows you to relax. We live in a McDonald’s world. We want everything now. I believe there’s something missing in our lives, rest. The more we read the more our minds relax from the pressures of life. When our minds are clear, we can focus on our daily tasks.
3. Reading helps you be a better communicator. Reading allows us to expand our vocabulary so that thoughts become deeper and wider. We want our words to be persuasive and help people stay motivated. We cannot communicate our vision if we don’t know where we’re going. When we read, we’re given vocabulary that will inspire others into action.
4. Reading keeps a mind young. I once read that watching television causes our minds to disengage.. When hooked up to a computer to monitor brain activity, watching television, the brain is on autopilot. In other words, zero activity. And it’s been linked to lower IQ than those who read.
Reading on the other hand, causes the brain’s synapses to fire. When we read we actually cause our minds to stay young. For every minute we watch television our knowledge decreases over time. Reading produces the ability to lessen or even prevent possible dementia in later years of life.
5. Keep your reading fresh. I read a lot. The problem I fall into is, I read a lot of the same material over and over again. We should expand our horizons. Don’t stick to just one genre. If you like fiction, try a non-fiction biography, better yet, read a financial book. If you’re into entrepreneurial books, read something about cooking. Variety is the spice of life. Change it up and you’ll expand your reach and knowledge.
When we read, we expand our mind and create new thoughts about the future. Take the time today, find a book, read for 15 minutes. Just doing that every day, you’ll be able to read a book in the next 30-40 days. Give it a try. I think you’ll like it.
